My colourful family of artists

Hey you,

I just have to tell you about my family and how art is in our genes. It's really nice to think back on it. Art has been with us for generations and has shaped our lives in wonderful ways. Our family has always been creative, free and unconventional, and I had the great privilege of simply being allowed to be. This strongly influenced my decision to become a full-time artist later on.

My grandma was already a little artist as a child. Because she didn't have any paper to paint on back then, she simply painted the walls. I always imagine it with a big smile on my face: little children's hands eagerly decorating the walls, while their parents probably stood by in despair and thought: ‘Not again!’ She probably laid the foundation for the fact that creativity in our family always finds its own, sometimes unconventional way - knows no boundaries and is simply allowed to be, even if the walls have to take the hit.

My mother then continued this artistic legacy in her very own way. She had a management consultancy with a huge office - all with white walls. And what do you do with so much free space? Exactly, you paint! My mum started creating large-format acrylic paintings. These colourful works of art transformed the office into something magical. It was the most beautiful playground for me. Canvases everywhere, pots of paint and the smell of fresh colour - that was my world.

Genau, man malt!

When I was a little toddler, I used to spend hours lying on the floor of my mum's office and drawing on huge sheets of wallpaper that were rolled out especially for me. I can still remember exactly how I created my own little worlds - with animals living in colourful little houses and roaming through imaginative landscapes. These moments were like an endless adventure in my own little fantasy world. And you know what? I started painting my first portraits back then, even though I was still as small as a dwarf! Oh yes, and don't forget: the walls of my room were my first canvas - I was allowed to paint on them and my mum always welcomed it. Instead of stopping me, she gave me even more colours and brushes.

My son Dion has definitely inherited the creative streak. He had his first gallery opening when he was just six years old - an unforgettable moment! Almost all of his paintings were sold, except for the ones I really wanted to keep, of course. It was simply incredible to see how enthusiastic people were about his work. At the age of 16, his curiosity is currently focussed more on IT topics, but who knows, maybe his creative journey will lead him to new artistic shores after all.

My seven-year-old daughter Mayla is also totally creative. She paints and does arts and crafts at every opportunity. Whilst she loves painting, she is often drawn to three-dimensional projects. She builds little houses out of cardboard boxes and moulds the wildest sculptures out of clay. Her creativity knows no bounds and I love to see her ideas take shape. Mayla is particularly interested in selling her work, so don't be surprised if she tries to get you to collect her art the next time you visit her studio ;-)

It's fascinating to see how this artistic passion runs through our family. Everyone has their own style and their own way of expressing creativity. I am so grateful for these colourful memories and the joy that art brings us. Maybe one day our paths will lead to our own little family gallery. Who knows?

I hope you enjoyed this little insight into my family life. Why don't you tell me what it's like at home?

Best wishes,

Shirin
