Why encourage creativity in children?
We all want a fulfilled and happy life for our children. But how do they get there? Do we want to raise them to be well-adjusted members of society who ‘function’ as smoothly as possible, or do we want to raise them to be self-thinking citizens who follow their own impulses and freedoms?
Imagine you could ‘bake’ your child's character. You have two options: a child who dutifully follows all the rules and always conforms, or a child who constantly thinks outside the box and comes up with the craziest ideas. Which would you choose?
Of course, it is sometimes tempting to have a child who ‘works’ without any problems. But if we train our children not to step out of line, we shouldn't be surprised if they don't emerge as self-starters or free thinkers later on. Children who are encouraged in their creativity are often better at dealing with problems and develop a strong sense of self-confidence. They learn to find their own solutions and fully realise their creative side.
Giving free rein to creativity
I was brought up that way myself. My parents always insisted that I use my imagination and go my own way. Today, as a self-employed artist, I appreciate the free and creative life that this has given me. When my son comes up with another crazy idea, I often think: ‘Wow, I couldn't have done it like that!’ It's fascinating to see how their creative minds work and how they come up with solutions that I would never have considered.
And research confirms this: creative children are often more self-confident, independent and imaginative. So why should we hold them back?
How do I encourage my children's creativity?
1. The inheritance of creativity
Creativity has many faces and can look different in every family. You may not have a family history full of artistic traditions, but that doesn't mean you don't have a creative spirit. Creativity can be unleashed in all of us.
2. The importance of free expression
Creativity should not be locked up! I offer my children an environment where they can live out their imagination. Whether they are painting the walls or putting their ideas on paper, I encourage them to follow their hearts and express themselves freely.
3. The role of support
Our job as parents is to support our children and have their backs. By praising their artistic endeavours and providing them with materials, we show them that we believe in them and support them in their creative endeavours.
4. Flexibility and openness
Creativity knows no boundaries and should not be forced into a tight corset. We should be flexible and respect our child's interests and preferences, be it painting, music or theatre. Let's help them to find and follow their own path.
5. The magic of boredom
Yes, you read that right: Boredom is a real insider tip! Nowadays, children are constantly provided with input from outside - whether it's all-day schools, after-school care, leisure activities, hobbies or, of course, the tiresome topic of digital. But this is precisely where the problem lies: if children never have the opportunity to be bored, they miss out on the chance to discover their own creativity. Boredom encourages imagination, because if nothing is given, their own minds have to come up with something. So let your child do ‘nothing’ and watch how they suddenly come up with the most exciting ideas.
